BT Speed Test
As part of an ongoing fault report you may be asked to perform a "BT Speed Test" (aka: Performance Tester). This special test is logged directly onto BT Wholesale's back-end systems and can be used as "proof" of slow speeds; any other speed test, such as www.speedtest.net is NOT logged onto BT Wholesale's systems and therefore cannot be used as "evidence" when we escalate a speed fault to BT.

How to perform the test
  • IMPORTANT: wait until the symptoms manifest themselves before running the test - if the test is performed when the speed is working correctly then you are unlikely to record any useful data with this tool.
  • Setup a diagnostic test environment:
    • Turn off all of your computers & the broadband router
    • Ensure that the broadband router is connected DIRECTLY to the hidden socket of the main BT wall outlet (with the face-plate removed)
    • Ensure that there are no extension wires or other devices (such as a telephone) connected to the BT telephone system
    • Unplug all network cables from the broadband router
      • If the router supports WiFi (wireless) then power OFF any devices that might connect wirelessly
    • Connect ONE computer only using a network cable
    • Press the power ON button and IMMEDIATELY tap the "F8" key until a menu appears on the screen...
      • ...at the menu choose the option "Safe Mode with Networking"
  • From the computer go to http://www.speedtester.bt.com
    • Click to confirm that you ARE running in the above diagnostic test environment
    • Click the option "ADSL and FTTC test"
    • Enter your "Telephone number" (the line that you have broadband on)
    • Leave the "Service ID" blank
    • Click "Go" to run the test
      • Be very patient: the test can take between 5 and 25 minutes! (Usually 5 minutes)
      • Here's a sample of the results page:
      • Please record the following information and relay it to us; we can then escalate the fault more efficiently with BT Wholesale:
        • Date & time
        • Download speed
        • Connection rate (downstream)
        • Connection rate (upstream)
        • Profile speed
      • IMPORTANT: do NOT run any further speed tests using the above site - BT Wholesale's systems only record the results of THE MOST RECENT TEST.
  • You can now return your equipment back to your original configuration.
